Writer Tim Burton brings his wonderfully weird and twisted touch to the holidays with this stop-action 3D animated flick, made in 1993. Jack Skellington is the mayor of Halloweentown. He’s tired of doing the same thing every year for Halloween, so when he discovers a place called Christmas Town, he’s excited by what he sees. He tries to get the ghouls and goblins to help him put on Christmas instead. In the process, Jack kidnaps Santa Claus, then delivers creepy gifts to horrified kids. Finally, he learns a few lessons and realizes that what he’s doing isn’t exactly in the holiday spirit. Stylish, spooky and clever, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a fabulous alternative to syrupy sweet holiday fare.
